It has only been a matter of days since the Haute Couture week took place but already Raf Simons’s debut collection for Christian Dior has carved a place for itself within the rich tapestry of fashion history. Donatella Versace, paying homage to her late brother with a collection that perfectly encapsulated all that was great about the Versace brand. At Chanel, Karl Lagerfeld celebrated the house’s 80th anniversary by delving into the past with a collection of bouclé jackets and feather-trimmed gowns. Both on the front row and on the catwalk, a Russian presence has dominated the proceedings this week. The debut show of designer Ulyana Sergeenko, who presented a collection inspired by her native country, full of velvet coats, lace helmets and embroidered hip flasks. Riccardo Tisci detailed cocoon capes and column dresses with red crystals and silk fringes. Little wonder that so many designers chose nature as an inspiration for their latest collections and an air of nostalgia has been evident at almost every show this week.
